My Story
I myself experienced great trauma following the death of my only child. Just preceding my son’s death my grandmother who helped raised me passed, following the death of my son, my mother-in-law passed, and then a couple months after that, my brother was shot several times in the back. That spinal cord injury rendered him paralyzed from the waist down at the hands of domestic
violence because his wife at the time, suffered from bi-polar disorder, schizophrenia, and multi- personality disorder. And then finally, a few months after that I found myself in the middle of a desert in Afghanistan deployed where I was exposed to more trauma. I had help outside of the church through the military. I can’t really say that my help came within the church simply because there were no available resources within the churches I attended. My goal is to change that narrative by bringing the gap between therapy and faith for African American pastors.
My journey highlights the importance of addressing mental health and trauma within
communities, especially when faced with limited resources. Our goal is to bridge the gap
between therapy and faith for African American pastors and churches. Many individuals within
the African American community turn to their faith for solace and support during difficult times,
and integrating mental health resources into this framework is transformative.
